What to wear for paragliding in Medellín

Medellín is mild, the launch is not. Dress for steps, a cool hillside and the wind in the air.

Most visitors pack for Medellín’s spring-like city weather and then stand at 2,400 metres on an open hillside, wait in the wind and fly through cool air. Nothing about the clothing is complicated: sandals are not accepted, and a T-shirt alone is too little for the air up there. The operators provide the harness and the pilot; everything else is yours to bring.

Closed shoes with grip

The listings ask for closed shoes, and sandals are not accepted for the flight. You need grip twice: on the 200 to 300 steps from the road up to the take-off area, and for the few running steps at take-off and on landing. Trainers or light hiking shoes work well. One reviewer had not expected the climb at all, another simply notes the many stairs.

Long trousers and a jacket

Wear long trousers and bring a jacket or a fleece you can close up to the neck. It is noticeably cooler on the hill than in the city, and in the air the wind adds to it. If you book a longer flight, the cold matters more. Medellín sees rain on 17 to 21 days in every month, so a light rain jacket is useful for the wait at the launch even when the morning starts dry. Rain by month is on our page about the best time to fly.

Passport, phone and some cash

Take your passport or a copy of it, as the listings ask. Keep your phone in a pocket that closes, and ask the pilot before take-off if you may hold it in the air. Several reviewers paid for extras on the spot, such as the video or a road toll, so a little cash in pesos saves a discussion at the top. Which flights include the video is on our video page.

A light breakfast

Eat something, but not much. Several reviewers mention feeling sick after the spins some pilots fly at the end. Tell your pilot before take-off if you would rather keep the flight calm. Some packages include breakfast; keep that light too.

Packing list

  • Closed shoes with a good sole
  • Long trousers
  • Jacket or fleece, plus a light rain jacket
  • Passport or a copy
  • Phone in a pocket that closes
  • Some cash in pesos for extras

On the climb to the launch

Three passengers on the way up. The two-star review is mostly about a climb she had not expected; the flight itself she calls amazing. Good shoes take care of most of it.

“Didn’t know we had to climb a mountain to get up to the place. The driver wanted to charge to drive up which is crazy since we paid to do this activity. But the actual paragliding was amazing”

“This was an adrenaline rushed activity that met my expectations of a safe first time paragliding experience. The host kept an open line of communication with me through whatsapp as I navigated through the climb on a taxi to get to the destination point. …”

FAQ

Can I paraglide in sandals?

No. The listings require closed shoes, and you need grip on the steps to the launch and for take-off and landing.

Is it cold when paragliding in Medellín?

Cooler than in the city. The launch is at about 2,400 metres, and the wind in flight makes it feel colder. Bring a jacket.

Do I need my passport?

Take your passport or a copy of it. The listings ask for it.

Should I eat before the flight?

A light meal is best. Some passengers feel sick after the spins at the end of the flight; ask your pilot to skip them if you are prone to motion sickness.

Can I take my phone in the air?

Ask your pilot before take-off. Keep it in a pocket that closes either way.
