The best time for paragliding in Medellín

Flights run all year. The month matters less than the hour, and the wind matters more than the rain.

APPI, an international paragliding association, describes San Félix as flyable on up to 360 days a year. That does not make every hour equal. The air above the Aburrá Valley is usually calmest in the morning, and in August and September the wind at the launch gets strong enough to limit flying to the early and late hours. Book a morning slot and keep a spare day in your plans, and the season becomes a minor question.

Morning is the time to fly

Thermals, the rising warm air that paragliders use, start to build from around ten o’clock, according to a guide to paragliding in Colombia, which advises against gusty afternoons. The dream of flying prefers flights between 9 and 12 and offers afternoon slots only in June, July, December and January. Green Bike Tours and BiciTour collect their passengers around ten. If you book a flight-only slot, ask for the earliest one, especially between August and September.

August and September bring the wind

From October to July the wind at San Félix is soft, up to about 30 km/h, and the launch can be flown most of the day. In August and September it reaches about 50 km/h, and the site is then flown early in the morning and towards the end of the day. August is one of the drier months in Medellín; September is wetter. A clear, windy afternoon can still mean a long wait at the top or a flight moved to another day. How wind limits take-off is explained on safety and licences.

Rain in every month

Medellín has no real dry season. January is the driest month, followed by July, February and August. The wettest stretches are April and May and again October and November. Even in January it rains on more than half of the days, so plan for rain whenever you come and keep the morning for the flight.

Fog, cloud and waiting at the launch

Reviewers mention fog and wind as the usual reasons for a delay. Pilots wait until the launch is clear and the wind blows from the right direction; one reviewer waited about an hour before the wind turned. Bring something warm for the wait, and do not plan an appointment in the city right after your flight. What to pack is on what to wear.

If the weather stops your flight

The rules differ by listing. Top 10 tours in Medellín, Xplore Colombia, Medellin Best Local Tours and the Ecoventure day from Medellín promise a full refund if the weather prevents the flight. Where a listing says nothing about it, ask before you book. Every GetYourGuide booking on this site can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before, which helps if the forecast for your day looks poor. Fly early in your stay, so that a postponed flight still fits.

Weather and waiting, in passengers’ words

The two five-star reviews describe a wait for the wind and a day with good weather. The two-star review from 2023 also mentions hours of waiting on the hill, there blamed on organisation rather than on the weather.

“It was a great experience. It took a while to get going because of the weather and the wind direction so I had to wait about and hour or so. But once we got going it was all good. My guide gave me the option of gliding over the waterfall or the city and I chose the waterfall. …”

“I had i wonder full time. Liz kept in contact with me leading up to the event and making sure we got picked up. Our driver Sebastain was great and give us little history on the drive to and from san felix. we had the best weather and views. …”
Rose · Bahamas · October 2026 Paragliding at San Félix with transport options · Only Fly
“Very unorganised. Waited for hours on the hill, tour guide didn’t come with us. Luckily there was a fluent Spanish speaker in our group who could ask people what was happening. People doing the paragliding with you seem friendly”

FAQ

What is the best month for paragliding in Medellín?

There is no single best month. January and July are the driest, and the wind is gentle from October to July. August and September are windy, so fly early in the morning in those months.

What time of day is best?

The morning. Thermals and gusts tend to build from around ten o’clock. The dream of flying prefers flights between 9 and 12 and offers afternoons only in June, July, December and January.

Can I fly in the rainy season?

Yes. Medellín has rain in every month, and flights run all year. Book a morning slot and keep a spare day in case the weather moves your flight.

What happens if my flight is cancelled because of the weather?

Several listings promise a full refund in that case; for the others, ask before you book. All GetYourGuide bookings on this site can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before.

Is it cold at the launch?

Cooler than in the city, and colder in the air. Bring a jacket, especially if you have to wait for the wind.
