Paragliding in Medellín, compared flight by flight

Nearly every tandem flight over the Aburrá Valley takes off from the same hillside at San Félix. The bookings differ in what they contain: minutes in the air, the ride up and back, the video, and the limits on weight and age.

Four hours on the booking, about 15 minutes in the air

The duration on a listing covers the whole outing. On a four-hour trip with pickup, most of that time goes to the drive from the city up to San Félix, waiting at the launch until the wind and your pilot are ready, the briefing and the drive back. The flight itself takes about a quarter of an hour; reviewers report between 8 and 15 minutes, and one found the ride long and the flight short. If more time in the air matters to you, look for operators that sell a 20 or 30 minute option.

What can cost extra

  • The video. Several operators charge for GoPro or 360-degree footage on top of the flight. Some listings put video under the inclusions while reviewers describe paying for it, which is why the table marks those cases. Not every pilot films reliably, so agree on it before take-off.
  • The ride. Flight-only bookings start at the launch. A taxi up is easy; getting back down can be slow, and one reviewer waited about two hours for a ride-share. A booking with hotel transfer solves both directions.
  • The road toll. Reviewers mention a small toll on the road to San Félix in each direction. Ask your driver whether it is part of the fare.

The launch sits above the road and is reached over a long flight of 200 to 300 steps. Some listings show a wheelchair-accessible badge anyway. If steps are a problem for you, ask the operator how they handle it before you book.

Licences, rules and the accident in September 2026

In Colombia, a tandem pilot needs a tandem licence from Fedeaereos, the national federation for air sports, and has to fly for a club that belongs to it. Companies that sell paragliding to tourists fall under the adventure tourism standard NTS-AV 013, which the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism describes as mandatory.

On 17 September 2026 a passenger died during a tandem flight at San Félix, and the pilot was seriously injured. According to the reports, the operator’s papers were in order; the public prosecutor’s office is investigating the cause. We cannot judge how safe an individual operator is, and no booking makes a flight free of risk.

Before you go up, ask to see the pilot’s tandem licence and ask which insurance covers you as a passenger. In August and September the wind at San Félix is noticeably stronger than in the rest of the year; book a morning slot in those months.

A slower second day in Medellín

Most flights are over by early afternoon. If you have another day in the city, the coffee farms on the slopes around Medellín are a quiet counterpart to the launch at San Félix: you walk through the plants, see how the beans are picked and roasted, and taste the result. Our sister site compares coffee farm tours from Medellín.

About this comparison

This is an independent comparison, not the website of a paragliding school or club. We list what each bookable flight includes and note where listings contradict themselves. When you book through a link here, GetYourGuide or Viator pays us a commission out of their margin; the price you pay is the same.

Common questions before a flight

How long is the actual flight?

On a standard booking you spend about 15 minutes in the air; reviewers report anything from 8 to 15 minutes. A few operators sell 20 or 30 minute options. The duration on the listing is the whole outing: between one hour for a booking that starts at the launch and about four hours for a trip with hotel pickup.

Where do the flights take off?

Almost all of them start from San Félix in the municipality of Bello, on the hills north-west of Medellín, at about 2,400 to 2,450 metres. The take-off area faces east over the Aburrá Valley. Combination tours with Guatapé use other launches, for example near Cocorná.

Is the video included?

It depends on the booking. Some packages include GoPro photos and video; with others the video is an extra paid on the day. A few listings name video under the inclusions while reviews describe a separate charge, and this site marks those as conflicting. Ask your pilot before take-off.

Do I need a hotel pickup?

Not necessarily, but it makes the return easier. Flight-only bookings meet you at the launch. A taxi up is simple to arrange; finding a ride back down can take time, and one reviewer waited about two hours for a ride-share.

Is there a weight limit or a minimum age?

There is no single legal limit; each operator sets its own. The listings compared here range from 115 to 140 kg, and minimum ages from 3 to 12 years where they are stated at all. Where an operator gives two different limits, we point that out. If you are close to a limit, confirm it with the operator before you book.

Is paragliding in Medellín safe?

Tandem pilots in Colombia need a tandem licence from Fedeaereos, and tourism operators fall under the adventure tourism standard NTS-AV 013. That reduces the risk but does not remove it: on 17 September 2026 a passenger died in a tandem flight at San Félix, and the investigation is ongoing. Ask about the pilot’s licence and your insurance before you fly.

When is the best time to fly?

Flights run all year. Mornings are usually calmer, because thermals build from around 10 o’clock. From October to July the wind at San Félix stays mostly light; in August and September it gets stronger, so an early slot is the better choice in those months. Medellín has rain in every month, with the driest spells from December to February.

What should I wear?

It is cooler at the launch than in the city and colder still in the air, so bring a jacket and wear long trousers and closed shoes; sandals are not allowed. Take your passport or a copy of it. If you get motion sick easily, ask the pilot to skip the acrobatic turns.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Fog and wind can delay or cancel flights. Several listings promise a full refund if the weather stops the flight, and most flights compared on this site can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before. Check the weather rule on the product page if your dates are tight.
